You might be asking yourself “ Why is it important to know the difference between locking and non locking sliders?” or any other type of slider. A slider is a slider, right?
We’ve had clients order zippers and they requested a non locking slider, not realizing the functionality of the slider they are using. After sewing the zipper into the dress, they soon realized that the zipper would not stay up at the top of the dress. This is one reason communication between customer service and you, our client, is key. You might be thinking that we are asking too many questions, but we want to make sure you are getting the right product for your line.
1. Non-Locking Slider is a slider that is made without an internal pin. It opens with very little effort and can open even if the two sides of the zipper teeth are pulled slightly apart from the open end.
A non-locking slider is used on totes, handbags, tents or used where there is little cross tension.
2. Locking Slider has an internal pin. It sits on the zipper teeth keeping the slider in that position. The zipper slider stays in place and does not move until it is moved manually.
A locking slider is used when making dresses, skirts, jackets and zip up sweatshirts to be used where you do not want the slider to move once in place.
3. Semi Locking Slider aka Auto Lock Slider is a slider that when the pull is in an upward facing position can slide down but when flipped over locks into place.
A semi locking slider is used on the fly zip of jeans or pants.
4. Open Trunk Slider is a slider that does not come with a pull. It is usually ordered when you have your custom zipper pull that you add to the zipper. The trunk (top) of the slider is open which allows you to add your pull. You still need to close the trunk with a tool so that the pull does not come off. If you would like to know how you can have your own pull made check out our article on how to create your own zipper pull.

5. Reversible Slider is used when a garment can be reversed and you would like the zipper to function the same from both sides.
A reversible slider is used on jackets and sweatshirts.
